CDR Extracting System for oil from food matrix
System characteristics
The system is composed of a press, two containers, some optional accessories (pipettes, test tubes for the centrifuge, spatula, etc.) and a centrifuge to be used for separating in the moisture the liquid part and the other substances of different densities (it could be CDR centrifuge or any other of similar characteristics already owned by the user).
The extracting system can be used on a wide range of food matrixes: with fresh olives for tests on small quantities of oil, with dried fruit to extract oil from walnuts, peanuts, almonds, walnuts of Brazil.
It is possible to extract oil also from sunflower seeds without removing the shell.
Another application is to press fruit and vegetables to obtain liquids that can be analysed later on.
The system has been developed to collect small quantities of product though they are absolutely sufficient to be used for tests with CDR Foodlab instrument.
The system has 2 different containers: the smaller one (Ø 35 mm, volume 32 ml), is recommended for extracting moisture from matrixes particular hard or poor of liquid; the bigger one (Ø 48 mm, volume 67 ml) f sample (e.g.: fruit, vegetables, olive, etc.)
Instructions:
Lay a single layer of sample on the bottom of the container and distribute it evenly.
Start pressing using an adequate strength and verify the liquid flow over the plate of the punch.
If the quantity of the moisture extracted is not sufficient, wait for about 10 seconds and then press again: the liquid emersed will increase.
It is possible then, with the help of a pipette, to withdraw the liquid and put it into e test tube. In some cases, when a huge quantity of liquid has been extracted, loosening the press, it is possible to remove the container and pour the liquid directly on the test tube. In case of pressed olives, it is necessary, with help of a spatula, to collect all the material emersed in a test tube and then centrifuge it in order to obtain the liquid to be used for the test.
Centrifuge - Depending on the type of matrix used, different velocity and time settings of the centrifuge has to be used. Anyway 5 minutes time and 4000 round/minute are normally sufficient for many matrixes. In any case it is up to the user to determine when the result obtained is satisfactory.
